Our country is burning.

While it burns, each and every one of us weeps for those who are lost, the homes that are destroyed and the decimated landscape and the fauna gone.

Australia is in the midst of the worst bush fire event in recorded history and I challenge you to find one person who isn’t affected or knows someone affected by this unprecedented disaster.

In the months since the bushfires started…

  • An estimated 480 million animals have perished, despite the best conservation efforts

  • 23 people have died. This includes three volunteer firefighters in NSW who have died while battling the fires.

  • 28 people have been declared missing

  • 12.35 million acres has been lost. That’s almost 12 times the size of the Black Saturday fires in 2009. According to The New York Times, it is also six times the size of the 2019 Amazon fires.

  • The smoke from the bushfire crisis has drifted to the South Island of New Zealand, more than 2,000 km away, turning the sky orange, and sections of their glaciers brown.

  • At least 1700 homes have been destroyed across the country in the fires.

And we are only in January…

Let’s rally the troops and do our best to support those affected by this disaster.

From Friday 21 February until Monday 24 February, Australian Sewing Advice and Inspiration will be hosting a Bush Fire Relief Auction to raise funds for BlazeAid in aid of their bush fire relief efforts. This auction will include creations from the makers throughout our beautiful community and beyond, and with a wide variety of handmade items to suit everyone will be on offer.
